Personal care may become increasingly challenging with age, and many senior citizens need assistance with personal care services such as dressing, bathing, grooming their hair, cutting their nails, etc. However, this doesn't mean they're totally helpless when it comes to personal care. Fortunately, there are grooming products designed specifically with seniors in mind. The following are five useful items that should be in your senior loved one's personal care cabinet.
Long-Handled Toenail Clippers
Even seniors who don't have mobility issues often struggle with cutting their toenails. Many simply aren't as flexible as they were when they were younger, while others experience balance issues that make cutting toenails difficult. As a result, seniors sometimes experience ingrown toenails, which can lead to a great deal of discomfort and may even become infected. Long-handled clippers make keeping toenails trimmed much easier.
Long-Handled Bathing Brush
A good long-handled bathing brush also helps seniors maintain independence when it comes to personal care tasks. These can be used to reach difficult-to-access areas such as feet, the backs of legs, and the back. Some seniors prefer to have loofahs or bath sponges on long handles rather than brushes, however.
Long-Handled Personal Wiper
Some seniors may also have difficulty using toilet paper after going to the bathroom because they simply can't reach the area. Because many are reluctant to ask for help with this task, a long-handled personal wiper will help them stay clean. They simply place the toilet paper on the end and wipe themselves as usual.
No-Rinse Bath Wipes
There are times when seniors appreciate having access to an alternative to taking a shower, which makes no-rinse bath wipes an excellent addition to their personal care cabinet. They simply wipe themselves clean using the wipes and then dispose of them. There is no need to rinse them, and if your senior suffers from dry skin, you can buy them in moisturized versions.
No-Rinse Shampoo Caps
No-rinse shampoo caps work on the same principle as no-rinse bath wipes. Your senior simply places the shampoo cap on their head, tucks in all their hair, and massages for several minutes to thoroughly distribute the contents. After about three minutes, the hair will be clean and odor-free. For an ultra-soothing experience, they can be heated prior to use. Certain brands are even formulated to be placed in the microwave. Most types also include conditioner to leave the hair soft and supple.
